L2: History and Philosophy Flashcards
(33 cards)
perceptual ambiguity
brain is not sure what it is looking at
Tactily
unconscious, we don’t think of it when perceiving, the brain just knows
laws of projective geometry
moving away from objects makes things shrink. the image on the back of the eye shrinks if we move closer
The perceived size of something is a _______ of the size of the retinal image and the perceived distance of that thing
function
size =
f
Moon illusion
The moon on the horizon looks bigger to us versus when we see the moon straight up. Even though the moon is the same size, we perceive it as bigger or smaller based on it’s location
The Inference Press
the brain will make educated guesses on what’s in the world based on the info it has and what it knows about the world. an educated guess
Ponzo Illusion
Horizontal lines (lines A and B) are the same size but looking at in difference contexts make t seem as they differ in sizes
linear perspective
cue used to tell us that part of the image is being depicted as far away, parallel lines converging in the distance
Unconscious Inference
brain may make an educated guess that is unconscious and don’t have access to
Emanation Hypothesis
when we look @ something, there is light in the eyes that produces with an object. What comes back tells the perceiver what is out there
Eidola Hypothesis
Light coming from a source (like the sun) reflects onto objects in the world, there is small copies that exist in the light that comes into the eye.
Eidola
a little copy of the object
Simulative assumption
Idea that there is a copy of objects in the world that’s in the light
projective assumption
the copy that is simulated gets projected into the back of the eye.
Homunculus
Theory that there is a little person (agent/soul/process) in our brain that is interpreting all the information in the back our eye and that goes on forever
infinite regress
reasoning or justification that pushes the problem into deeper level that will never come to an end.
(philosopher theory critic)
process type explanation
we need something really specific in order to give an explanation on why something happens (Philosopher theory critic)
Descartes
mind-body relation
mind body relation
How we control our bodies and how our desires of what are we intending to do Play out
mind as a puppeteer
mind is controlling the body
body influences the mind
body goes through something and signals the brain of what the body just went through
Doctrine of Corporeal Ideas
The mind being in touch with the body, it’s states and how the body is being affected which creates our perceptual experience
doctrine of specific nerve energies
nerves relate to sensation and experiences are tied to the nerves and states of neuron. We experience light from stimulating the optic nerve
