L4 River processes Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is erosion?
Removal of material
What is deposition?
Dropping of material
Name the FOUR ways in which erosion happens in a river
- Hydraulic action
- Corrosion
- Attrition
- Abrasion
What is hydraulic action?
Water from the river wears away the soil around the river
What is corrosion?
Small particles dissolve in the river
What is attrition?
Rocks being carried in the river smash together and break into smaller rocks
What is abrasion?
Rocks in the river wear down the river bank/bed
What is a river bed?
The bottom of the river
What is a river bank?
The sides of a river
Erosion in a river happens in two directions - what are they?
Vertical erosion (eroding down)
Lateral erosion (eroding sideways)
Name the four types of river transportation
- Solution
- Suspension
- Saltation
- Traction
For transportation: what is traction?
Large material rolling along the river bed
For transportation: what is saltation
Smaller stones bounce along the river bed
For transportation: what is suspension
Tiny, light particles float in the river
For transportation: what is solution
Minerals dissolve in the water
