Lab 1 Flashcards
(19 cards)
Magnification
visually enlarging a sample to see in closer detail than possible with the naked eye
Total Magnification : power of ocular * power of objective
ex: 10x * 5x = 50x
(Power of ocular always 10x)
μm micrometer
10^-6 of a meter
Resolution
Microscopes ability to differentiate between close objects
Is bacteria alive?
Bacteria is alive because it has cell membrane
Are viruses alive and how do they reproduce?
Viruses are not alive (no cell membrane) and they don’t reproduce ON THEIR OWN
What does it mean to be Acellular
To have NO cell membrane
Ex: Viruses
Are cell membranes in all living things?
Yes, cell membranes are in all living things !
Where is our DNA located?
Our DNA is in our nucleus
What is the cover slip?
Object of interest is under cover slip
What does the condenser lens do?
Minimizes the loss of light
lens system that focuses light from the light source at the base onto the specimen on the slide.
What does FOV stand for?
Field of view
Ex : 5x has the largest FOV (biggest perspective)
What is a coarse focus knob?
It moves the stage at a larger distance
Does Amoeba have a nucleus?
Has a nucleus while bacteria does not
What is a parfocalized or a parfocal microscope?
A parfocal or parfocalized microscope is a type of microscope that maintains focus on a specimen when changing between objective lenses
When you switch from one objective to another, after focusing the object once, you don’t need any major focusing adjustment that is, you use only minor focusing changes using the fine focus knob.
What is nosepiece in a light microscope?
Rotating part which holds the objective lenses
How to visualize a virus?
Using an electron microscope
Iris diaphragm lever:
Allows adjustment of light intensity that enters the condenser.
Can we see bacteria using a light microscope?
Yes bacteria can be seen using light microscope
