Lab 2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is Chromotography?
- Technique to separate mixtures
-Separate molecules from each other in a mixture of molecules
analyte, stationary and mobile phase
and example from class
Analyte (molecule) (substance we are trying to find/measure)
Stationary phase- stays in one place
(PAPER)
Mobile Phase- move
(SOLVENT)
What is Affinity?
attraction between two molecules
(mobile and stationary)
Differential affinity
The difference in affinity between substances
(Ex: Blue has more affinity to the solvent than yellow dye did)
What is a Solvent?
Can dissolve a molecule
Ex: WATER
What make a solution?
Solute and solvent
What is a solute
Solute- Substance that gets dissolved
Rf (retention factor)
The Ratio of the distance the substance travels TO THE distance the solvent travels
What is the range of Rf, minimum and maximum possible value?
Minimum- 0
Maximum- 1
What is the metric system?
internationally agreed upon measurement
system based on decimals or powers of 10.
What are the units for volume, mass, distance, and temperature in metric system?
Volume- L (Liters)
Mass- kg (Kilograms)
Distance- m (Meters)
Temperature- C (Celsius)
Formula to calculate Fahrenheit or Celsius
9C= 5F-160
Precision
repeatability in those measurements
the level of consistency or reproducibility of measurements when the same quantity is measured multiple times under similar conditions
Accuracy
how close a measurement is to the true or accepted value
