What are the first steps to take in an emergency for insect bites and stings?
Check the person’s airway, breathing, and pulse. If necessary, begin rescue breathing and CPR.
Why is it important to reassure the person experiencing an emergency due to insect bites or stings?
To try to keep him or her calm.
What should be removed from a person experiencing severe reactions to insect bites or stings?
Nearby rings and constricting items.
Why should rings and constricting items be removed in case of insect bites and stings?
Because the affected area may swell.
What should you use if the person has one for emergencies related to insect bites and stings?
The person’s Epi-pen or other emergency kit.
What should you do if a stinger is still present?
Remove the stinger by scraping the back of a knife or other straight-edged object across the stinger.
DO NOT use tweezers as they may squeeze the venom sac and increase the amount of venom released.
How should you clean the bite or sting site?
Wash the site thoroughly with soap and water.
What is the recommended method to reduce pain and swelling?
Place ice (wrapped in a washcloth or other suitable covering) on the site of the sting for 10 minutes and then off for 10 minutes. Repeat this process.
What can you take or apply if itching occurs?
If necessary, take an antihistamine or apply creams that reduce itching.
What should you watch for over the next several days?
Watch for signs of infection such as increasing redness, swelling, or pain.
What should you NOT do with blisters from burns?
DO NOT burst blisters.
DO NOT put pressure on burn area. DO NOT use antiseptic sprays, ointments, butter, or other home remedies.
What should you remove from a burn area?
Remove constricting clothing and jewelry.
How should you treat a burned area?
Immerse burned area in cool (not ice) water for at least 10 minutes. For facial burns, apply clean towels soaked in cold water.
How should you cover a burned area?
Cover burned area loosely with clean gauze or cloth.
When should you seek medical attention for burns?
Seek medical attention for burns on the face, genitals, hands, or feet.
What should you do first for third degree, chemical, or electrical burns?
Call for EMS
What should you NOT do until EMS arrives?
DO NOT remove shreds of skin or burst blisters.
What home remedies should NOT be applied to burns?
DO NOT apply antiseptic spray, ointment, butter, or other home remedies.
What should you NOT remove from a burn victim?
DO NOT remove adhered particles of clothing, but be sure all clothing is extinguished.
What clothing should be removed from a burn victim?
Remove constricting clothing and jewelry.
What should you do if the burn is from a chemical?
Remove contaminated clothing and place victim under shower of cool water for at least 5 minutes.
