Lab 3 Quiz Flashcards
Reflex
An involuntary, usually rapid, motor response to a stimulus
Somatic reflex
A reflex that stimulates a skeletal (voluntary) muscle(s)
Autonomic reflex
A reflex that stimulates smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, or glands. Autonomic reflexes regulate a variety of body functions
3 Functional Classification of Neurons
- Sensory (afferent) neuron
- Interneuron
- Motor (efferent) neuron
Sensory (afferent) neuron
Carries information from periphery (senses) to the CNS
Interneuron
Acts as link between sensory & motor neurons
Motor neuron
Carries command from CNS to effector
Sensory receptors
Detect stimuli originating from outside of or from within the body
Somaticsensory receptors
Provide general sensory information originating from skin and skeletal muscle
Visceral sensory receptors
Provide general sensory information originating from the visceral organs
Cerebral Cortex
- superficial (2-4mm) layer of cerebrum
- integrates sensory information
- initiates motor output
- involved in emotions and intellectual processes
Lobes of the Cortex
Frontal
Temporal
Occipital
Parietal
Somatosensory Cortex
receives sensory information (nerve impulses) for touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception
Areas of the body with more _______ have greater representation in cortex.
Sensory receptors
Proprioception
sensation of where body is in space, necessary to sense body movements and relative position of body parts to one another
3 Structural Classification of Neurons
- Unipolar
- Multipolar
- Bipolar
