What consists of Class Bryidae and what phylum does it belong to?
True mosses, belongs to phylum Bryophyta
Describe key features of Class Bryidae
-have peristome
-long seta
-no pseudopodium
Life cycle of true mosses
spore -> young gametophyte -> mature gametophyte -> archegonia & antheridia development -> sperm swims to archegonia from antheridium -> sperm gets fertilized -> zygote forms -> young sporophyte grows from zygote attached to gametophyte -> sporophyte produces spores by meiosis -> spores are released
What is Class Sphagnidae and describe key features
Peat moss
-grows in bogs
-short seta
-no peristome
-pseudopodium is part of gametophyte
Class Andreaeidae
Granite moss
-grow in mountainous/arctic regions
-lack peristome
-lack operculum
What is the protonema
The early gametophyte
Hyaline cells
Aid in water retention and gas exchange
