Lab 6 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What consists of phylum Lycopodiophyta?
Order Lycopodiales (club mosses), order Selaginellales (spike mosses), order Isoetales (quillworts)
Key differences between the orders in phylum Lycopodiophyta
Order Lycopodiales: homosporous
Order Selaginellales: hetersporous, ligules
Order Isoetales: hetersporous, ligules
Heterospory vs. Homospory
Heterospory means that there two distinct sizes of spores; microspore and megaspores whereas homospory refers to just having one. Megaspores lead to the production of a large female gametophyte whereas microspores lead to the production of a male gametophyte
Describe club mosses (order lycopodiales)
-have xylem and phloem
-rhizomes
-microphylls
-roots
-strobili
Function of strobili
Strobili are reproductive structures that contain sporangia. They function in spore production
What is a sporophyll?
A modified leaf inside the strobilus that contains sporangia. It is found in horsetails, club mosses, and some ferns
What are rhizophores?
A root-bearing structure that emerges at branch nodes and extend towards the soil. They are neither root nor stem
