50
After hyperventilating in fresh air, blood carbon dioxide content increases or decreases?
decreases
51
What is Expiratory Reserve Volume and how is it determined with the spirometer?
ERV is the amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled from the lungs after a normal exhalation. After exhaling normally into air, forcefully exhale all remaining air into spirometer (average is 1000 mL for males, 700 mL for females)
52
A decrease in the blood CO2 level is followed by a ............... in the rate of respiration.
decrease
53
What is Vital Capacity and how to test for this with spirometer?
VC is the sum of the inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume and tidal volume. Inhale as big as possible and exhale into spirometer as big as possible
54
What is Inspiratory Reserve Volume?
IRV is the amount of air that can be forcefully inhaled in the lungs after a normal quiet inhalation. cannot get this info from spirometer, but can with this formula: IRV=VC-(TV+ERV) (average is 3000mL for males and 1900mL for females)
55
What is Residual Volume?
RV is the volume of air remaining in the lungs after a forceful exhalation (average 1200mL in males and 1100mL in females)
56
Hyperventilation into a bag causes blood CO2 to .................
Increase
57
an increase of blood CO2 will be followed by a(n) ................... in the rate of respiration
Increase
58
Can a person hold their breath longer when they hyperventilate beforehand?
yes
59
Hyperventilation decreases the ....... in the blood so it takes longer for it to accumulate high enough to stimulate respiration.
CO2
60
Is the rate and depth of respiration is inversely or directly related to blood CO2 levels?
directly
61
when blood CO2 levels increase, what happens to the rate of breath?
It increases.
