Lab 6 - Bacteria and Eukarya Flashcards
(33 cards)
Species
A time of living organism. More than 1.5 million have been discovered
Taxonomy
The science of grouping various species into groups by likeness.
Genus
Closely related species. Example the genus “Panthera” would be the leading term of Panthera onca, panthera pardus…
Family
Similar genera (plural of genus) grouped together
Orders
Groups of families which are groups of genera.
Classes
Groups of orders, which are groups of families, which are groups of genus.
Phyla
Groups of classes which are Groups of orders, which are groups of families, which are groups of genus.
Kingdoms
Groups of phyla, which are Groups of classes which are Groups of orders, which are groups of families, which are groups of genus
Domains
Groups of kingdoms which are Groups of phyla, which are Groups of classes which are Groups of orders, which are groups of families, which are groups of genus
Animalia
A type of Kingdom that refers to animal life
Plantae
A type of kingdom that refers to plant life
Fungi
A type of kingdom that refers to fungus.
Eukarya
A type of Domain that refers to eukaryotic life
Bacteria
Unicellular and Microscopic (smaller than eukaryotes) A type of domain that refers to prokaryotic life. Very similar to the earliest forms of life dating back 3.5 billion years
Archea
A type of domain that refers to a close relative of prokaryotic life but can exist within extreme conditions
Binary Fission
Cell replication for prokaryotic life
Chemoheterotrophic
An organism that gets its energy from the oxidation of organic materials.
Filaments
Bacteria that are attached by a “thread”
Pathogenic
Disease-causing
Flagella
Using a similar motion to a propeller, it exists in all three domains. Aids in cellular movement.
The three shapes of bacteria
Bacillus, Coccus, Spirillum
Bacillus
Rod-shaped bacteria
Coccus
Spherical-shaped bacteria
Spirillum
Corkscrew-shaped bacteria
