Lab 8 Flashcards
(28 cards)
What are classifications of some temperatures
psychrophiles
mesophiles
thermophiles
What are classifications of some pH
acidophiles
Neutrophiles
alkaphieles
What are classifications of osmolality
osmotolerant
non-osmotolerant
What are a species cardinal temperatures
minum, maxium, ptimume
What are pshychrophiles
only grow below 20 degrees
What are mesophiles
grow betwen 15 to 45 - most pathogens
What are thermophiles
grow above 40
what are hyperthermolphiesl
above 80
E. coli
E. coli is a mesophile that grows best at 37 degrees Celsius in neutral pH environments
Thermophile
Bacillus stearothermophilus
Bacillus stearothermophilus
Bacillus stearothermophilus is a thermophilic, optimal temperature range (center, 65 degrees C), 39ºF (4ºC) to 118ºF (48ºC).
example of psychophile
Micrococcus cryophilus
Bacillus subtilis,
mesophilic bacteria
What does low temperatures do to mriobes
membranes can solidify and enzymes do not function properly
What do very hgih temepratures do
Damanged is caused by denaturing enzymes and other proteins and disrupt the microbial memrbane
How does extreme pH affect microorganisms
Affects the structure of all macromolecules including the hydrogen bondin holding together DNA and lipid molecules and protien
What is the compoennt of the cell thats most sensitvie to PH
Protein. moderate changes and modify amino acid functional groups and disrupt hydrogen bonding -> affect protein folding and promote denaturation
Which organisms are neutrophiles
E. coli
Staphylococcus
Salmonella
Give 2 acidophiles
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (4-6)
Lactobacillus casei
Use of high concentrations of salt and sugar
increase osmotic pressure -> create hypertonic enviornment that doesnt support the growth of microorganisms
Why do prokaryoties need water
To maintiain cellular turgor pressure and to avoid plasmolysis which is the shrinkage of the cell memrbane as water leaves the cell
what are some osmotolerant speices
Staphylococcus spp.
What are non-osmotolerant species
cannot survive less than 3%
What are halophiles
require > 3% to surve
