Lab Equipment Flashcards
(23 cards)
Beaker
Holds solids/liquids, only should be used to estimate large volumes, glass, not for measuring small volumes or accurate volumes
Beaker Tongs
Beaker tongs are used to move beakers that contain hot liquids, they have a rubber coating to grip the glass beaker better
Bunsen burner
Bunsen burners are used to heat non-volatile liquids and solids
Crucible and cover
Crucibles are used to heat certain solids, especially particular metals to very high temperatures. The cover is used to contain any smoke particles and maintain heat.
Crucible tongs
Used for handling hot crucibles, also used to pick up other hot items but not beakers
Conical flask
These whole solids or liquids that may contain gas due to reaction, they are used to mix chemical, prevent spills and splatters and their narrow neck limits of operation and can closed off
Test tubes
Used to mix chemicals and also heat chemicals in small amounts, are used for observing chemical reactions, can be used for heating chemicals, come in different sizes
Florence flask
Used for mixing chemicals without splashing, the round bottom allows chemicals to be heated evenly, mostly used for distillation, narrow neck reduces evaporation
Evaporating dish
Used to heat stable solids and evaporate non-volatile solutions
Clay triangle
Used to support crucibles or evaporating dishes when being heated over the Bunsen burner
Forceps
Used to hold up small objects
Funnels
Used to help transfer liquids from one container to another they can also hold filter paper and can be used for filtering
Graduated cylinder
Have a scale on their side that helps them to measure volumes of liquid more accurately, come in different sizes, can be plastic or glass speaker
Pipette
Used to dispense very accurate volumes of liquid in small amounts, can also come in glass with a rubber bulb on top for suction
Retort stand
Used to secure flasks, cylinders, test tubes, etc or when heating things over the Bunsen burner
Wire gauze
Can be used on a triangle stand to provide a place for a beaker to stand
Test tube rack
Holds test tubes upright during experiments and leaves hands-free also allows observation
Spatula
Used to transfer solid chemicals
Stirring rod
Used to manually stir solutions without exposing hands to chemical chemicals
Mortar and pestle
Used to grind solids into fine powders to speed up the mixing process in a reaction
Watch glass
Used to hold small amounts of solids such as the product of a reaction, can be used to cover an evaporating dish or beaker
Rubber stoppers
Used to seal reaction vessels such as flasks and test tubes
Test tube brushes
Used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders
