Lab P - Bacteria Flashcards
(26 cards)
Ubiquitous
“Present everywhere”
Cultured
Bacteria that comes (was grown) from a laboratory setting
Inoculation
The process of introducing bacteria to a solid or liquid growth medium.
Colony
A single bacteria that continuously divides until it forms a small pile
Media (liquid broth or solid agar)
Allow the growth of many bacterial organisms or restrict growth to only some specific types (selective)
Cocci
Spheres
Bacilli
Rods
Spirilla
Spirals
Strepto
In chains
Diplo
In pairs
Staphylo
In clusters
Gram Reaction
One of the most important tests for classifying bacteria.
Gram positive
Bacteria that is stained dark purple by the reaction
Gram-negative
Bacteria that is stained pink
Peptidoglycan
a complex polysaccharide unique to bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria have cells walls composed primarily of this.
Sterilization
The destruction of all forms of life
Autoclave
A sterilization tool
Disinfection
Destroys pathogenic microorganisms (not necessarily all life).
Physical Agents
Heat, UV, radiation, ionizing radiation, sonic disruption, and filtration.
Chemical Agents
Lysol, phenols, detergents, iodine, and formaldehyde.
Cidal
Chemicals that kill pathogens- lethal.
Static
Chemicals that temporarily arrest growth - Bacteriostatic, fungistatic.
Antisepsis (Degermination)
The chemical disinfectant of skin
Triclosan
An active ingredient in most antibacterial household soaps.
