Lab Review Thoracic Limb Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the purpose of the dorsoscapular ligment?
Concussion
What two muscles attach the trees major tubercle on humerus?
Teres major and Latissimus dorsi
What makes up the cephalic groove?
Laterally the brachiocephalicus and medially the descending pectoral
Axillary lymph center infection may result in?
lack of panniculus reflex- the lymph center is adjacent to the lateral thoracic nerve
Brachial plexus formed by?
last three cervical and first two thoracic ventral branches of the spinal cord
Ansa axillaris composed of? encircles?
Median and musculocutaneous nerves, the axillary artery
What is sweeney?
Suprascapular nerve damage- from heavy working collar or from stopping short and pulling out the nerve. Symptoms include a prominent scapular spine, unstable lateral aspect of the shoulder joint, resulting in abduction. Unsafe to ride.
Structures in carpal canal (equine)
1) Tendon of DDF
2) Tendon of SDF
3) Medial palmar a.
4) Medial palmar n.
Structures in the flexor retinaculum (equine)
1) Tendon of FCR with own synovial sheath
2) Radial Vein
3) Radial Artery
4) Lateral Palmar A.
5) Lateral Palmar V.
6) Lateral Palmar N.
How do you inject the shoulder joint?
Palpate the point of shoulder- greater tuberosity, and the tendon of insertion of infraspinatus, place needle above the point of shoulder and in front of infraspinatus.
Why is the bicipital bursa difficult to inject?
Overalapped by the brachiocephalicus muscle
Axillary nerve supplies which 6 muscles?
Subscapularis Teres Major Teres Minor Deltoideus Cliedobrachialis Articularis Humeri
Where does the axillary nerve terminate in horses?
At the level of carpus- in all other animals it goes to the digits
Why won’t you see cutaneous deficits if the horse loses its radial nerve?
Overlap between the radial nerve and the axillary nerve
Four structures separating the long and short parts of the coracobrachialis
1) proximal muscular branch of musculocutaneous n.
2) cranial circumflex humeral vein and a
3) tendon of insertion of trees major
Palpating lacertus fibrosis will allow you to feel what nerve?
Termination of musculocutaneous n.
Collecting lymph node for thoracic limb in horses?
Cubital lymph nodes
May irritate median nerve if infected- no sensory deficits
Where does the ulnar nerve run on the ante brachium?
between ulnar head and humeral head of FCU
SDF radial head=
proximal check ligament
How to preform an ulnar nerve block
palpate the accessory carpal- go a hand breadth above that point. feel ulnar nerve in space between UL and FCU (no clear point in doing this…)
Accessory ligament of the DDF=
distal check ligament
Thoracic limb vs. pelvic limb distal limb blood supply
Thoracic= medial palmar artery Pelvic= dorsal metatarsal a. on lateral aspect of limb
Thoracic limb vs. pelvic limb medial palmar/plantar n. course
Thoracic limb= runs between SDF and DDF
Pelvic limb= runs between suspensory lig and DDF
What is hygroma?
Bump on knee formed when extensor tendon sheath becomes herniated when horse falls
