How do we measure CAD?
Using an optical encoder. A disc with holes of varying sizes connected to the shaft is used. On one side of the disk is an LED, and on the other a photon sensor. By analyzing the signal with a signal converter, output CAD is estimated.

with Diatomic Molecule I-R Absorption. Certain gases absorb light at certain wave lengths and convert is to heat energy. This is the physics behind it.

What does an Unburned HC-Basic FID Detector do?
By mixing exhaust with FID fuel, and doing some wish-wash electricity things we count ions that matches the exact amount of carbon-atoms in the molecules and their concentration. So its an carbon counter.
