Labelling Theory Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is labelling theory
Social constructionist perspective that argues that deviance is not inherent but a social reaction to act. When ppl labelled ‘deviant’ ‘criminal’ (esp by those in power) they may internalise label and alter their self concept and behaviour accordingly. Lead to secondary deviance where they commit further deviant acts as its now a part of their identity
What is master status in labelling theory
Once labelled, label can become master status, overshadow all identities eg (ex con) which influences how others treat them
How does power and inequality impact labelling theory
Powerless are more likely to be labelled and policed by dominant social groups in ways that reinforce their own dominance eg racism in justice system
What is a strength of labelling theory
Highlights the role of societal reaction and power in defining deviance
Strength of labelling theory in its application
Helps explain recidivism and stigma, whyy ppl may reoffend after criminal justice system contact- work towards destigmatising crime
What is a key limitation of labelling theory
Ignores the primary deviance- why was that committed ?
Focuses only on reaction
