Corrosion(solution)
A chemical reaction between certain rock types and salt and acids in the seawater. Evident in limestone and chalk cliffs, causing water to turn milky colour at bottom of cliffs
Corrasion
Sand and pebbles in the waves are thrown against rock surfaces with a lot of force, breaking off more rocks which are then also used
Attrition
When boulders in seas are rolled around constantly and chip away at each other until smooth pebbles or sand are formed
Hydraulic action
The pressure of the water being thrown against the cliffs by the wave. Includes pressure of air in cracks. When water gets into the cracks, it compresses the air in the cracks, putting more pressure on them.
A coast
A narrow strip between the land and the sea which constantly changes due to the effect of land, air and marine processes.
Swash
The rush of seawater up the beach after the breaking of a wave
Fetch
The maximum distance of water over which winds can blow. This effects the size of the wave. The bigger the fetch the longer the wave
Constructive wave
Deposit sand and pebbles that form beaches. They have a powerful swash which is more powerful the backwash and so deposits sediment on beaches. Break infrequently. Found on gentle sloped beaches.
Destructive waves
Responsible for coastal erosion and removing sediment from the coastline. They have a stronger back wash than the swash so they carry sand and pebbles away from the shore. Break 10-15 times a minute. Found on steep beaches.
