Q

What are 3 different types of LCD technologies?

List an advantage and disadvantage of each.

A

Twisted Nematic (TN LCD)
-fast response times so good for gaming and fast moving graphics
-poor viewing angles so have to view directly in front

In Plane Switching (IPS LCD)
-best color representation
-more costly to produce than TN

Vertical Alignment (VA LCD)
-compromise between TN and IPS so good color representation but
-slower response times than TN

Q

What is OLED?

Describe construction of display and effect of it.

What devices typically have OLED?

A

organic light emitting diode

does not have a backlight, instead organic material emits light when provided with a current;
no backlight and no crystals means the display is very thin and light and no glass needed in front to protect the display

smart devices, tablets, phones

Q

What is CCFL and what is the difference between the former and LED backlighting?

A

Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

CCFL
-type of backlight generally in older laptops
-thicker and requires more power

LED backlighting
