Q

What does the Pope want to emphasize and what does he want to reject?

A

Emphasize: Human beings, endowed with intelligence, must
respect the laws of nature and the delicate equilibria existing between the creatures of this world.
Reject: Human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbour and with the earth itself. According to the Bible, these three vital relationships have
been broken, both outwardly and within us. This rupture is sin.

Q

What is the common belief about how technological innovation will affect environmental challenges?

A

We look at technology through an “undifferential paradigm.” We need to see that technological products are not neutral.

Q

What is Guardini’s remark about human use of power in today’s world? #107 What must we understand and acknowledge about technological products?

A

We assume that growth and power are limitless. We need to see that technological products are not neutral.

17
Q

How does technological innovation interact with the free market economy? What is the common (mis-)understanding about how environmental problems, especially food supply, will be solved through operation of the economy?

A

The economy accepts every advance in technology with a view to profit, without concern for its possible negative impact upon human beings. Some maintain that current economics and technology will solve all environmental problems, and argue that global hunger and poverty will be resolved simply by market growth.

18
Q

What is his statement in Art. 56 about the “deified market”; who/what is victimized by the market? 3 pts.

A

Whatever is week and vulnerable such as the poor, cannot protect itself against a “defied market.”

19
Q

What is “practical relativism?” Then give three examples of how practical relativism can play out in the economy; that is, describe the horrifying, immoral behaviors that cannot be stopped by leaving the market to work by itself.

A

Practical relativism is a relativism that that judges everything as relative to my wants and needs. The practical relativism of our age is what allows us to use other people to our advantage, to let the impersonal forces of the market call the shots. Personal relativism allows us to blood diamonds, sex trafficking, degrading the environment to what I want etc.
