Layers of the Eye + Anatomy Flashcards
(12 cards)
Outer Fibrous Layer
Contains the Sclera and Cornea (continuous with each other for structure and protection)
Vascular Layer
Choroid (contains blood vessels), iris, and ciliary body
Inner Neural Layer
Has Retina, which is comprised of pigmented layer innermost and neural layer outermost
Anterior Cavity
Front of the eye extending from cornea to the lens
Filled with aqueous humor
Two chambers
The two chambers of the anterior cavity
Anterior Chamber:
Location is space between the cornea and iris. Filled with aqueous humor
Posterior Chamber: Location is narrow space between the iris and lens, including the area around the ciliary body. Filled with aqueous humor
Posterior Cavity
Located within large space behind the lens, extending to the retina
Filled with vitreous humor
Ciliary Body
Connects the to the lens and controls its shape
Optic disc (blind spot)
Is the exit that leads to your optic nerve (collection of axons)
Pupil
The hole the lens sits in
Fovea
Area with highest amount of cones (photoreceptors)
What structure is unique to a sheep’s eye?
Tapetum Lucidum. Sits behind the retina to enhance night vision.
OR, it’s their rectangular pupils that allow for wider field of view compared to humans.
Tracing a Photon through the eye
Enter through CORNEA. Pass the IRIS and through PUPIL hole that’s created by PUPILLARY MUSCLES. Then pass through LENS to focus light onto RETINA. Photoreceptors (rods and cones) see the light. CHOROID prevents stray photons from activating more receptors. The photoreceptic info turns into a neural signal traveling via OPTIC NERVE where half of vision crosses at OPTIC CHIASM to travel to visual cortex (lateral and contralateral depending on left/right vision)
