What are the 3 aims of LDDC?
1) To economically regenerate the area primarily attracting private investment
2)To physically regenerate the area to aid the above (to look nice)
3) To improve the living conditions and prospects of the community of the docklands
What enterprise zones:
Introduced in 1981 to attract start up companies with the incentive of reducing corporation tax
+/- of enterprise zones:
It had 5000 companies
but existing companies moved in bringing the workforce reducing amount of available jobs
How much cargo Was handled in the London docklands in the 1960s?
60 million
Why was the London docklands starting to loose trade?
Other ports had lower warehouse charges and fast handling times
ships were getting bigger and the river was not deep enough to accommodate
What innovation led to LDDC to loose trade?
Containerisation
reduces labour
increased the speed and efficiency of transporting goods
more cost effective
After the war what type of housing was built?
Sub-standard and low quality housing such as tower blocks were built in the 1950s and 1960s. These were built to replace the bomb damaged housing from the Second World War.
What did the dockworkers do that lead to the closing down of lddc?
Strikes for higher pay and company could not afford it so they stopped by 1980
