What is the story of Abraham?

A

Abraham lived about 4000 years ago in a town called Ur where we now call Iraq. Abraham was rich and respected with his animals and his wife Sarah. The people of Ur worshipped many Gids such as god of the sun, moon and the stars. Abraham saw this as wrong and began to believe that there was only one God. He gradually became more and more sure about it. Abraham felt that God was telling him to travel to another country so he set out with his famiky and believed that God woukd show them the way. As they travelled Abraham felt that he was getting to know more about his God and that there was a special relationship. Jews believe that God promised Abraham that he would become the father of a great nation and all his children and their children would have the same special relationship with God.

Q

What is the story of Moses?

A

Moses lived in a difficult time in Jewish history as the Jews had been slaves in Egypt and were treated woth great cruelty by their masters as they were afraid that they might take over the country. They wanted to get rid of all the Jews in Egypt so they killed all baby boys at birth. However, Moses was not killed because his mother hid him in a basket by the river side where the Pharoah’s daughter found him and raised him as if he was her own son.
When Mkses grew up he saw how badly the Jews were being treated and one day killed a slave-driver who had beaten a Jew to death and then had to leave Egypt for several years or hw would be killed himself. But then he felt God had work for him to do and God spoke to him to go back and free the Jews. After some persuading, Moses went back and a series of plagues happened in Egypt and Moses told the Pharaoh that they were sent by God and at last he agreed to free the Jews. But then the Jews spent the next 40 years wondering from place to place after leaving Egypt but then they eventually found a country called Canaan and this became their home. When they were wondering Moses was the Jews’ leader and they believe that God gave Moses the Torah whilst they were wondering which is the Teaching which Jews follow. God promised the Jews would be his ‘Chosen People’ in return they had to obey the laws which God gave. This is believed as the second promise, the first one being that Abraham would be the father of a great nation.

About 4000 years ago, the people who lived in what is today called India worshipped many Ogds like fire, water and wind but then the northern part of the country was taken over by invaders who brought their religion with them which worshipped the sun, moon and sky and these two religions gradually joined together. The the idea that all of these Gods were the same person, Brahman, began to spread. It stayed like this for hundreds of years until people became dissatisfied by it and other religions were much more popular. Then the Hindu stories were written down and important teahcers spent their lives teaching these stories and the beliefs became clearer and it became popular again.
