Why is public participation important?
To ensure that leaders do not abuse their power and to ensure that the government is informed about the public’s needs and can take action accordingly
How does one participate publicly
By playing an active part in decision that affects you.
Voting
Standing for elections
Joining political organisations
Define leadership
Any behaviour that influences the actions and attitudes of others to achieve certain results
The 3 basic types of leadership styles:
Authoritarian
Democratic
Laissez-faire
Define Authoritarian leadership
Goal oriented
Can become rigid and controlling
Overly focused on having power
Define Democratic leadership
Balance clear direction and respect for ideas and contributions of others
Consult others input first before making decisions
Encourages creativity while still taking responsibility and ensures that the task is clearly defined and on track
Define Laissez-faire leadership
Often expects groups to solve problems on their own
Hands off, offering little to no guidance or direction to the team can lead team to confusion and less productivity as result of uninvolved, detached leader.
