Learning Flashcards
(25 cards)
Non associative learning
Response to something in the environment
Habituation
Diminished response following repeated exposure
Frequency, duration, and intensity
Freq: Greater duration between exposure to stimulus -> slower habituation
Dur: Short exposure ->slower habituation
Inten: Very intense stimuli -> lower habituation
Dishabituation
The reappearance of a habituated response
Sensitization
Repeated exposure to a stimulus leads to an increase in response
Unconditional stimulus (US)
Elicits a response without learning
Unconditional response
A natural response
Conditional Stimulus
A stimulus that was neutral but creates a response through pairing with US
Coditional response
The response that is elicited by the CS after being paired with US
Rescorla Wagner Model
Reward is expected not given. Strength between US + CS declines
More reward is given than expected strength between US and CS increases
Principles of Classical Conditioning
Acquisition -> Extinction -> Spontaneous recovery
Higher order Conditioning
Adding another step to learned association
Discrimination
Responding differently to two similar but different stimuli
Generalization
Responding similar to two similar but different stimuli
Blocking
A second CS doesn’t elicit a response because the first CS has already been paired with the US
The Conditioned Compensatory Response
Neutral stimuli + Unconditional stimulus -> unconditional response
Conditioned stimulus -> conditioned response
Operant Conditioning
The process by which a response becomes more or less likely to occur, depending on the consequences.
Studied by Edward Thorndike + B.F. Skinner
Thorndike’s law of effect
Any behaviors that lead to a satisfying outcome are more likely to occur, and any that lead to a non-satisfying outcome are less likely to occur
Ratio Fixed reinforcement
Reinforcement given after a set numbers of behaviors
Ratio Variable
Reinforcement is provided after several responses, but the number isn’t fixed
Interval Fixed
Reinforcement is provided after a set amount of time
Interval Variable
Reinforcement is provided after a time but the time isn’t set
Shaping
Reinforcing behaviors that are increasingly similar to the desired behavior.
Instinctive drift
The tendency to revest to instinctual behavior
