Q

why does this theory lack face validity

A

punishment should reduce behaviours but a first cigarette is not pleasant and the first time somebody gambles often results in a loss so it doesn’t explain why its repeated

Q

why is an interactionist approach better

A

because this theory better explains maintenance than initiation so it could be a predisposition of vulnerability is needed to explain individual differences

Q

outline SLT as a theory of addiction

A

initiation:
SLT- role models being enforced,
operant conditioning- positive reinforcement increases behaviours

relapse and maintenance:
operant conditioning- negative reinforcement (withdrawal symptoms) mean the addictive behaviour is carried on to remove unpleasant feelings
classical conditioning- cues can become associated with the addictive behaviour
