Fungiform papillae
Fungiform papillae –
Shaped somewhat
like mushrooms
Each has about 3
taste buds
(concentrated at the
tip & sides of the
tongue
Vallate papillae
Vallate (circumvallate)
papillae – Large,
arranged in a V at the
rear of the tongue
Each surrounded by a
deep circular trench
7 – 12 vallate papillae
Contain up to half of
all taste buds
Filiform Papillae
Filiform papillae –
Tiny spikes without
taste buds, most
abundant and small
Foliate papillae
Foliate papillae –
Form parallel ridges
on the side, adjacent
to the molar and
premolar teeth
Olfaction
the sense
of smell, is a response
to airborne chemicals
called odorants
These are detected by
receptor cells in a
patch of epithelium
(olfactory mucosa)
