What is a wave?
A wave is a disturbance that propagates through space, transferring energy, not matter.
What are the two types of waves?
All waves can be divided into two types: transverse and longitudinal.
What is a transverse wave?
In a transverse wave, the oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.
What is a longitudinal wave?
In a longitudinal wave, the oscillation is parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
What is an example of a transverse wave?
light waves and other electromagnetic (EM) waves are examples of transverse waves.
What is an example of a longitudinal wave?
Sound waves are an example of longitudinal waves.
What does amplitude tell us?
Amplitude tells us how much energy the wave is carrying.
What does the amplitude of a light wave indicate?
The amplitude of a light wave gives the brightness/intensity of the light.
What does the amplitude of a sound wave indicate?
The amplitude of a sound wave gives the loudness/volume of the sound.
What is frequency in the context of waves?
Frequency is the number of waves that pass a point every second.
How is frequency measured?
Frequency, f, is measured in hertz (Hz).
