lec 10- signal processing Flashcards
what is signal processing?
the task of manipulating sound component elements
what are the four basic types of signal processing?
- frequency alterations- transposition
- timbre alterations- equalization and filtering
- time asked alterations- delay, reverb, chorus, phasing, flanging etc.
- dynamic (amplitude) alteration- compression, expansion, gating
what is pitch shifting?
changes the pitch of selection with or without preserving the duration of the sound file, comes under frequency alterations
what is a pitch blend?
a digital tool that changes pitch and duration at the same time
what is pitch correction?
puts sound in correct pitch, e.g. autotune
what is vibrato?
a subtle change in pitch, common in stringed instruments
audio rate = frequency modulation or fm
what is filtering?
lets certain frequencies through
what is a wah wah?
a tool used by guitarists which consists of a band pass filter
what is a vocoder?
modifies speech into a number of tuned frequencies
what are the 4 different processes in time?
flanging = 0.1-20 ms
chorus = 15-35 ms
echo or reverb = 50-100 ms
discrete delays = 100+
what is time stretching?
changes the duration of a sound file without altering the pitch, comes under time time based alterations
what comes under dynamic processing?
compression, expansion, normalizing, etc.
