Lect 7 Flashcards
In situ conservation
All about habitat
Primary players (who does most of the conserving)
real estate people, lawyers, politicians
-Minor or nonexistent
Conservation biologists
hotspot conservation
- Theres certain places on the planet we call biodiversity hotspots
- –World wildlife fund has alot to do with
- –Its to identify areas on a planet that can conserve as many species as possible wit the smallest area
Places with neat biota
Caves
Wildlife conservation society
WWF
Called NGOs. Nongovernmental organizations
Why is PA land not fully developed
1wildlife engineers
2. State parks
Nature conservancy of pa is concerned about
habitats rather than species conservation
World heritage sites
There as much about people as they are plants and animals
Great smoky mountains
Yellowstone national park
To get lawyers and politicians to help with habitat there has to be
- Will
2. Some kind of perception that what theyre doing is good
Selling conservation
Very rarely is the general public concerned about saving habitat
Very rarely is the general public concerned about saving habitat
Charismatic megafauna
People are more easily sold abt saving elephants, rhinos, whales, fuzzy pups
Compared to flies
Umbrella species
Ex is tiger
Conserving it conserves a whole bunch of other stuff
Keystone species
-Species whose presence has a disproportional effect on the ecosystem compared to their abundance
-They have a bigger effect on their ecosystem than their abundance would suggest
Wolves fur moose. Moose like to forage and streams. The wolves who hunt in streams make the moose change their behavior and forage less in streams. Alot of cegetation came back along the streamline and the abundance of birds went way up all of a sudden
Ecosystem engineers
Create their own ecosystems
Example is coralreefs
Example is beavers
Ecological economics
How much are people willing to save for biodiversity?
Conventional market approaches
