Lecture 02 - Setting SMARTer Goals: Ready and Prepared with a Plan Flashcards
How can we improve our chances to succeed at our personal goals? (10 cards)
What is the reframed way of formulating today’s question?
How can we overcome our self-control limitations to succeed at our personal goals?
How can we reach more of our personal goals?
- Don’t pursue too many goals at the same time
- Frame our goal pursuits in a SMAART way
- TRY TO BOOST YOUR BELIEFS OF SELF-EFFICACY SO THAT YOU ARE READY TO ACHIEVE THE GOAL
What is self-efficacy?
beliefs about your ability to successfully perform certain actions
what is self-efficacy NOT?
self-esteem
actual ability
what are the benefits of having self-efficacy?
- Focus your attention more effectively
- Exert more effort
- Optimism in face of obstacles
the relationship between self-efficacy and goal progress is r = 0.39
What is Heidi Grant Halverson’s #1 secret?
make an implementation plan
what is a proven way to overcome self-control limitations?
take 5 minutes to outline an implementation plan that specifies where, when and how you will pursue your goal
What are the intentions and effects on goal progress of implementation plans?
- goal intentions alone do not guarantee the success of actions
- goal setting should be followed by planning
- implementation intention is an if-then plan that specifies when, where, and how the behaviour will lead to the achievement of a goal
94 independent studies show a significant positive effect of Pearson r = .33
What is Fogg’s Behaviour Model?
– The Fogg Behavior Model shows that three elements must converge at the same moment for a behavior to occur:
- Motivation, Ability, and a Trigger
– When a behavior does not occur, at least one of those three elements is missing
– The Fogg Behavior Model (FBM) makes it easier to understand behavior in general
What is the answer to the question of the day?
- limit the number of goals
- make SMAART goals
- boost your self-efficacy
- augment the goals with implementation plans
