Malnutrition is a state in which a deficiency of nutrients such as energy, protein, vitamins and minerals causes measurable adverse effects on body composition, function or clinical outcome

What is The malnutrition “spiral”

A

Malnutrition inhibits gastrointestinal function:
Mucosal atrophy
Achlorhydria (no stomach acid)
Reduced pancreatic enzyme output
Decreased intestinal motility
Increased mucosal permeability (to bacteria)
Leads to diarrhoea and dehydration
Driving deterioration in health and prognosis
