Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is malnutrition
Malnutrition is a state in which a deficiency of nutrients such as energy, protein, vitamins and minerals causes measurable adverse effects on body composition, function or clinical outcome
What is The malnutrition “spiral”
Malnutrition inhibits gastrointestinal function:
Mucosal atrophy
Achlorhydria (no stomach acid)
Reduced pancreatic enzyme output
Decreased intestinal motility
Increased mucosal permeability (to bacteria)
Leads to diarrhoea and dehydration
Driving deterioration in health and prognosis
How do you Maintain Health
Regulation of basic bodily functions Temperature control Fluid balance Electrolyte balance Muscle Strength Falls, cough/resp muscle function Inactivity Reproductive Health Including health of the baby in pregnancy Psychological Well-being Including self-care and therefore nutrition
How do you Recover from illness / surgery
Healing Wound Fracture Surgical anastamosis Fighting infection Clearing chest infections (cough strength) Immobility Venous thromboembolism Pressure sores
What is the MUST screening tool
BMI score+Weight loss score+Acute disease effect score= Overall risk of malnutrition
