Lecture 1 - chromosome abnormalities in human disease Flashcards

(14 cards)

1
Q

What are the 4 types of human genetic disease?

A
  • Single gene disorders (cystic fibrosis)
  • Genetic components of complex disease (diabetes)
  • Chromosomal abnormalities

Q

What are examples of changes in chromosome structure (right number of chromosomes but severe change in chromosome)?

A
  • Deletions
  • Duplications
  • Inversions
  • Reciprocal translocations
  • Robertsonian translocation - can lead to Down’s syndrome

Q

What are P & Q arms on chromosomes?

A
  • P (short arm)
  • Q (long arm)
    on chromosomes

Centromere = end of P & start of Q

Q

Describe the difference between polyploidy & aneuploidy

A

Polyploidy - number of copies of all sets of chromosome (e.g. triploid = 3 sets of 23 pairs in humans)

Aneuploidy - chromosome number is not normal but not the whole set
