Q

What are the 4 major functions in production of the kidney?

A

Produces renin- Regulates blood pressure via vasoconstriction.

Produced erythropoietin - it acts as a signalling hormone. Causes maturatation of RBC and sends into blood stream.

Produces prostaglandin - Causes vasodilation.

Produces active vit D - Allows the gut to absorb calcium more readily. Sun converts cholesterol to inactive Vit D.

Q

What happens in a hypertonic solution?

A

The cells shrivels up as H2O diffuses out of cell.

Q

What’s hypertonic?

A

Q

What’s the ion distribution like in the body? (Relate to plasma, interstitial, intracellular) and why?

A

Plasma and interstitial are very similar but plasma has more proteins e.g. platelets, antibodies, clotting proteins

Intracellular have high potassium levels and low sodium conc due to atp-ase

17
Q

What is regulated in the kidney?

A
  • Volume of extracellular fluid
  • Osmolality of body fluid
  • Conc of electrolytes
  • PH of blood
