Q

Why should you be interested in histopathology?

A

Because it helps to distinguish healthy tissue from abnormal tissue. It also helps in recognizing different diseases. Lastly, it can help figure out what caused the disease, how to treat it, and determine if treatment worked.

Q

Who won the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine? And for what?

A

Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramón y Cajal. They both revealed the structure of the nervous system beginning at the cellular level. Golgi used silver staining and Ramón y Cajal mapped out the cerebral cortex.

Q

What is humoral pathology?

A

The idea that diseases are due to an imbalance in the four fluid humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.

Q

Who is Giovanni Battista Morgagni?

Q

Who was Marie Francois Xavier Bichat?

A

Lived only 31 years, but accomplished much. Discovered 21 membranes (tissues) that make up organs, without a microscope. Introduced the idea that tissues are separate entities and diseases attack the tissues, rather than the organs or the whole body. Organic life- heart, intestines, and other organs regulated by small independent thoracic brains ( ganglionic nervous system) Animal life- eyes, ears, and limbs..included habit and memory and ruled by whit and intellect.

Q

Who is Rudolph Carl Virchow?

A

Wanted to relate histology with pathology Believed in the cell theory, cells can only come from preexisting cells.

Q

How did Bichat and Virchow establish histology as a separate discipline?

A

Bichat discovered 21 different tissues and introduced the idea of diseases attacking those tissues, not organs or the body as a whole. Virchow’s basis was on the cell theory that since cells come from preexisting cells, disease originates from the cell.
