Q

How is glaucoma diagnosed?

A

Dye in eye to observe the optic nerve
Visual field examination
Measure eye pressure
Determine if open or closed glaucoma (gonioscopy)
Measure the thickness of cornea (pachymetry)

5
Q

Define primary open angle glaucoma

A

Caused by blockage in the trabecular mesh work which drains the anterior chamber of the eye to the episcleral veins through the canal of schlemm
Leads to pressure build up due to inadequate drainage of aqueous and vitreous humour

6
Q

What is humour?

A

Fluid in the eye and it drains via the trabecular mesh work

10
Q

What are miotics?

A

Involves construction of the pupil of the eye
Pulls iris away from trabecular mesh work - improves outflow opening up the angle further

16
Q

What are carbonic anyhdrase inhibitors?

A

Decrease production of intraocular fluid
Increase perfusion of eye
Reduction in intraocular pressures

17
Q

Example of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor

A

Dorzolamide

18
Q

What do symothomimetics do?

A

Very effective at reducing humour production and increase outflow

19
Q

What are the side effects of sympathimimetics?

A

Blurred vision, discomfort, headache, nausea, hyperaemia

20
Q

Example of sympathomimetics

A

Brimodine

21
Q

What are beta blockers used for in the eye?

A

Reduces aqueous humour production

22
Q

What are the issues with beta blockers?

A

Increased heart rate and asthmatic patients feeling more breathlessness

23
Q

Define trabeculoplasty

A

Form of laser surgery that is used to lower intraocular pressure in glaucoma

24
Q

Define tracbeculectomy

A

Type of glaucoma surgery performed on the eye that creates a pathway for fluid inside the eye to be drained

25
Q

Role of anti metabolites

A

Prevent scarring by inhibiting the manipulation of cells which produce scar tissue

26
Q

Example of antimetabolites

A

Mitomycin C or 5 flurouracil

27
Q

Define visocanaloostomy

A

Remove part of the eye

28
Q

Define deep sclerectomy

A

Widen the drainage tubes in the eye

29
Q

Define cyclodiode laser

A

Destroys tissue in eye responsible for aqueous formation

30
Q

How is closed angle glaucoma managed?

A

Medical treatment, laser treatment no surgical treatment
Aim to reduce intraocular pressure and slow progression of nerve damage
Reduce amount of AH produced or increase drainage through the trabecular mesh work

31
Q

Define glaucoma

A

Optic nerve which connects the eye to the brain becomes damaged

32
Q

Define acute angle closure glaucoma

A

Caused by the drainage in the eye becoming slightly blocked which raises the pressure in the eye
