16
Q

Describe sensation of the mouth:

A

CN9 (Glossopharyngeal) posterior tongue

V3 manibular n. -> Lingual branch = General sensation (Also special sensation (taste) = cauda tympani, offshoot of CN7)

CN12 (Hypoglossal) Entire tongue (motor) i.e Intrinsic muscles, genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus EXCEPTION: Palatoglossus (vagus nerve) [FOrms palatoglossus arch]

17
Q

What are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?

A

Palatoglossus

Styloglossus

Hyoglossus

Genioglossus

18
Q

If laceration to the tongue results in pulsatile bleeding then what structure has been hit and where?

A

The laceration has passed the hypoglossal muscle has been passed, entering the second potential space filled with vessels (Lingual art.)

19
Q

Describe the location of the submandibular gand:

A

Superficial part its in the submandibular space… (the most inferior space of the two) it has the facial art. & vein, part of the hypoglossal nerve.

Deep part of submandibular gland sits in sublingual space (space under tongue), which also contains the sublingual gland + duct, sublingual art + vein, branches of the hypoglossal n. and glossopharyneal n.

20
Q

What innervates the soft palate?

A

All soft palate muscles are innervated by the vagus except: Muscular part of tensor vali palantini (V3 -> Medial tegway n.)

21
Q

What are the muscles of the soft palate?

A

Muscular part of tensor veli palantini

Levator veli palantini

Palatopharyngeus

Palatoglossus (from underside of aponeurosis)

22
Q

What three muscles are closely related to the submandibular gland?*

A

Mylohyoid

Hyoglossus

Genioglossus

23
Q

Damage to what nerve / its branches would result in ipsilateral weakness of the tongue?

A

Hypoglossal n.

Except vagus innervation of palatoglossus.

24
Q

Where does the sublingual and submandibular duct exit?

A

The sublingual caruncle near the frenumlum of the tongue

25
Q

What is the blood supply of the sublingual gland? what its innervation? (same as submandibular)

A

Sublingual artery and submental artery (branch of facial artery)

Veins are same

Chorda tympani innervates (CN7 branch) -> goes to submandibular ganglion

26
Q

What two muscles does the submandibular duct arise between?

A

Mylohyoid and hyoglossus muscle

27
Q

Describe the types of papillae found on the tongue:

A

Fungiform (general outer tongue)

Filiform (General central tongue)

Vallate papillae (the V shape found towards the back of the tongue before the oropharynx portion of the tongue)
