Lecture 17 Flashcards
electrostatic attraction which arises between to ions of opposite charge
ionic bond
the sharing of a pair of electrons
covalent bond
because the valence shell electrons are not held as tightly, the electrons can easily move from one metal atom to another.
metallic bond
elements move to lower energy, and so a more stable structure, when they have an octet or electrons around them in the valence shell.
octet rule
The amount of energy necessary to take the lattice and separate all of the ions to the point that there is not longer any Columbic attraction between then.
lattice energy
lattice energy is always what kind of value
POSITIVE
a measure of the attraction an atom has for bonding electrons.
