Lecture 22: DNA Replication Flashcards

1
Q

What are DNA polymerase requirements?

A

Requires:

  • all four deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dATP, dGTP, dCTP, dTTP)
  • magnesium ions Mg 2+
  • a primer (sequence of bases used to initiate synthesis synthesised by primase). Growing chain only occurs by attaching deoxyribonucleoside mono phosphate to the 3’ OH end of DNA
  • a template strand

Q

DNA polymerase 3 is essential for prokaryotic DNA replication

A

-only DNA polymerase 3 works fast enough to account for the rate of DNA replication in cells
