“Sit & Wait” attack strategy
AKA ambush predators.
Stay in one place, wait on the approach of prey then strike quickly.
“Search & Pursue” attack strategy
Very active in pursuing prey.
Primary Defenses
Avoid detection by predators
Secondary Defenses
Once detected, evasion of predator.
What is crypsis and what does it protect against?
Primary defense: Hiding/camouflage.
Protective against visual predators.
What is disruptive coloration?
Secondary defense: Break up the outline of prey making it difficult for predator to locate.
what do eyespots do?
Secondary defense: Trick predator into mislocating the head (indicates opposite direction of travel, minimize injury)
What is flash coloration?
Secondary defense: startles predators.
Many are cryptic at rest. If disturbed, they can startle the predator and then hide again while the predator is distracted.
