Lecture 4 Information Architecture Flashcards

What is Information Architecture (IA)?
IA is the process of organizing and structuring content so it’s easy and fast for users to find. It connects users to content and context efficiently.
What are the 3 key components of IA?
Navigation – UI elements that guide users through content (e.g., menus, links).
Structure – Visual hierarchy of the app/site content.
Taxonomy – Categorization and grouping of content (like organizing furniture in a house).
What is Navigation in IA?
UI elements/links that show users their current location and options for where to go next. Focuses on findability and discoverability. Tools: A/B Testing, First-click testing, Heatmaps, Surveys.
What is Structure in IA?
Visual and logical organization of the entire app/site, showing how content is laid out. Helps users understand where content belongs.
What is Taxonomy in IA?
A hierarchical classification system for organizing information. Think “what goes where”, like furniture placement in a home.
What’s the difference between Structure and Taxonomy?
Taxonomy = What content goes where
Structure = How it’s presented to the user
What is Implicit Architecture?
Relationships between content that are inferred by the user, often unintentionally.
What is Explicit Architecture?
Architecture that is clearly visible to users—like a navigation bar or category menu.
What is Cognitive Load in IA?
The amount of information a user’s brain can process at once. Designers must minimize it by showing only relevant information.
What is a Content Audit?
A full review of existing content on a website/app to evaluate quality, relevance, and structure. Helps identify what to keep, update, or remove.
What does Context mean in Information Architecture?
The situation or environment in which the user accesses content. It determines what should be shown, how it’s organized, and why it matters right now.
What is Visual Hierarchy?
The arrangement of elements to guide users in understanding what’s most important.
What is Deep vs. Flat Hierarchy?
Flat = Few levels, simple structure
Deep = Many levels, more complex but detailed structure
What is a Polyhierarchy?
A structure where a single item can appear in multiple categories or locations.
