Lecture 4- Integumentary system Flashcards
What is the integument?
-skin, nails, hair, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands
-largest organ in the body
-consists of epidermis and dermis
-hypodermis is not part of integument
What are the functions of the integument?
protection, prevent dehydration, sensation, temperature regulation, vitamin D synthesis
Are there blood vessels in the epidermis?
no
Where on our bodies do we have thick epidermis?
palms of hands and soles of feet
What are the 5 layers in the epidermis?
stratum basale (attaches to basement membrane), stratum spinosum (spiny), stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum (transparent), stratum corneum (sluffs off),
Which layer of epidermis is not found in thin skin?
stratum lucidum
What are the cells of the epidermis?
Melanocyte, merkel cells, and keratinocytes
What changes the pigment of skin?
melanocytes
What are melanosomes for?
protection
What are the types of skin marks?
nevus and freckles
What is nevus?
-overgrowth of melanin-forming cells
-harmless unless it mutates and becomes malignant
What are freckles?
yellowish or brown spots from excessive melanocyte activity, not increased melanocyte cells
What are the two layer of the dermis?
papillary and reticular
What is the papillary layer of dermis made of?
areolar tissue
What are scars?
damaged skin is replaced by fibrous tissue (collagen produces by fibroblasts)
What are wrinkles?
-loss of collagen and elastic fibers
-decreased thickness of dermis
-skin is less springy
What is the structure of the hypodermis?
-areolar and adipose connective tissue
What are the functions of the hypodermis?
-anchors skin to underlying structures
-thermal insulation
-energy reservoir
What are nails?
Scale-like modification of epidermis
-contain hard keratin
What are the three part of the hair structure?
hair bulb, hair root, and hair shaft
What is hair composed of?
hard keratin
What are the hair shaft layers?
medulla (inner soft part), cortex, and cuticle (outer hard shell)
What are the types of hair?
lanugo (fetal), vellus (peach fuzz), terminal hair (more corse)
What are the functions of hair?
protection, sensation, and reduction of heat loss
