What is a Variable?
A variable is any aspect of a situation that is important and measurable
What is a Knowledge Gap
A knowledge gap is the difference between what the decision-maker knows about a variable versus what he or she wants to know.

The decisionmaker/ researcher does NOT know the variables in a situation but needs to know them.

The researcher knows the variables but wants knowledge of their precise size, number, or other characteristics.

The researcher knows the variables and their
characteristics but wants knowledge of the causal relationship among variables.
Exploratory Research
Exploratory Research is the design used for
a Knowledge Gap I.
Descriptive Research
Descriptive research is the overall
design for a level 2 knowledge gap.
Overall Design Summary
Conducting a research project that is based on and directly related to the decision-maker’s knowledge gap.
