Q

Episcopalianism

A

Bishops have the authority in the church. 3 offices: Archbishop/Bishop, Elders, Deacons

20
Q

Presbyterianism

A

Elders have authority over the church. 2 offices: Ruling Elders/Teaching Elders, Deacons

21
Q

Congregationalism

A

The congregants hold the authority, with the offices of elder (pastor) and deacon. Each congregation has it own authority; no outsider can tell it what to do

22
Q

Elder/Pastor/Overseer

A

One of two offices. List of qualifications in 1 Tim 3 and in Titus 1. Often overlooked: desires office and not quarrelsome. Consider: patterns of life vs. once-for-all standards

23
Q

Plurality of Eldership

A

Elders always mentioned in the plural in Scripture. Elders need their own shepherds for support and accountability

24
Q

Complementarianism

A

The office of elder is reserved for men. Both are made in God’s image and equal in worth, but they are designed for complementary roles.

25
Egalitarianism
Since men and women are equal, they may both hold the office of elder.
26
Deacons
The word means service, the function of a deacon, to take care of the people. Could be men or women.
27
Church Membership
Corporate affirmation of confession or confessor
28
Church Discipline
Corporate doubt of confession or confessor
29
Formative Discipline
Discipleship; forming into right belief and action
30
Corrective Discipline
Stepping in to correct what has gone wrong
31
Goals of Discipline
Restoration; purity of the church; done formally as the church; excommunication rests in the assembly; it is good for the one being disciplined, the church disciplining, and the watching world
32
Ordinances and Sacraments
We hold to two - baptism and the Lord's Supper - as opposed to the Catholic seven
33
Baptism
The first ordinance instituted by Jesus given to the church in which new believers are to be submerged in water in God's name. A visual sign of union with Christ in death and resurrection (new life)
34
WWW Baptism
new believers, entry right into new covenant family, when the local church comes together
35
Credobaptism
Baptism of new believers
36
Pedobaptism
Baptism of children of believers
37
The Lord's Supper
Recurring sign of entry into God's kingdom
38
Eucharist
Thanksgiving
39
WWW the Lord's Supper
Baptized believers, remembrance-communion-hope, when the local church comes together
40
Transubstantiation
Catholic. Change in substance to the literal body and blood of Jesus. Communion is the repeated sacrifice of Jesus mass after mass
41
Consubstantiation/Sacramental Union
Real presence in the substance; union with the body and real eating and drinking of Christ, but denies physical change in substance.
42
Spiritual Presence View
Denies the physical presence of Jesus, but sees a unique spiritual presence. Emphasize participation in Christ, Jesus as the bread of life and nourishment to the soul, true communion rather than a mere memorial, spiritual nourishment of souls of believers, tridirectional understanding in past and present and future
43
Mere Memorial View
Tangible sign of past reality. To be remembered, it must be absent. Ordinance but not sacrament (which means mystery)
44
Totally Open Communion
Anyone and everyone is included in the Lord's Supper (largely dead in theory, reviving in practice as people refrain from addressing the limits that should be placed on it)
45
Open Communion
Any Christians in the world
46
Close Communion
Baptized believers may take communion
47
Closed Communion
Communion reserved for members of the local church where it is being served
