Lecture 5: Intro to Eumetazoa Flashcards
(6 cards)
Metazoa
“Later,” group after Protozoa and Parazoa
multicellular, eukaryotic, heterotrophic organism lacking cell walls
have at least two tissue layers
synonymous with animals
Eumetazoa
includes tissues, organs, digestive tract
have at least smooth logintudinal and circular muscles
Radiata
- body with radial symmetry
- includes Cnidaria and Ctenophora
Bilateria
- body with bilateral symmetry
skeleton
a solid or fluid system permitting muscles to be stretched back to their original length following a contraction
may or may not have protective and supportive functions ( some support, some just provide location for muscle attachment)
not all skeletons look like human ones!
hydrostatic skeleton
fluid cavity that evenly transmits pressure, fluid filled, has muscles supporting cavity(avoids it blowing up like a water balloon)
flexible outer membrane, can deform
volume of fluid constant, keeps it rigid but can change shape to adapt to environment (like a tire)
temporary attachments with substrate
