What are four reasons why referencing is important?
Credibility (you’ve read around the subject); helps assessors evaluate your work; gives credit to original authors; shows you understand academic conventions.
What is referencing?
Acknowledging the sources of information you use in your work to show how others’ ideas have informed your own arguments (Newcastle University).
What bibliographic details should you record as you collect sources?
Author; title (article/chapter/book); editor (if applicable); edition, volume, issue; publisher; place of publication; web page URL and access date; key words; search strategies.
Name four common referencing styles and their typical disciplines.
APA (Education, Psychology, Sciences); MLA (Humanities); Chicago/Turabian (Business, History, Fine Arts); Harvard (Social Sciences, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities).
What is citing?
Making a brief in‐text acknowledgment that points the reader to the full reference details of the source.
How does citing differ from referencing?
Citing is a brief in‐text mention (author, year) that directs the reader to the source; referencing is the full list at the end with all publication details so the reader can find the source.
What is plagiarism?
Taking ideas or words from a source without crediting the author, considered an academic crime akin to theft of intellectual property.
Why can avoiding plagiarism be confusing for students?
They must both cite relevant sources to show reading, and at the same time explain ideas in their own words to reach original conclusions.
How can cultural norms influence perceptions of plagiarism?
Western education values critical recombination of sources, whereas some Asian cultures emphasize memorization and reverence through imitation, which can be misinterpreted by Western teachers as plagiarism or immature writing (Hyland 2006).
