What does the Minimal Pair test tell us?
When two sounds belong to different phonemes
What is the criteria for the minimal pair test?
- Same number of phones
- Same environment
- Contrast in only one segment
- Distinguish meaning
What does it mean if two words are a near minimal pair?
The segments belong to different phonemes
What is the criteria for Near minimal pairs?
- Same immediate environment
- More than one phonetic difference
- Differ in meaning
