A

An interaction between 2 or more different species in which one is negatively impacted and the other is neither negatively nor positively impacted.

A

The consumption of one organism (the prey) by another organism (the predator) in which the prey is alive when the predator first attacks.

How can a true predator be classified?

A

True predator:

  • kill prey almost immediately
  • usually eat whole organism
  • eat several or many prey during lifetime
  • usually applied to carnivores
    eg. lions, eagles, carnivore plants etc.

How can a grazer be classified?

A

Grazers:

  • usually do not kill prey
  • consume part of the prey organism
  • often attack large numbers of prey
  • more herbivore grazers
    eg. sheep, cattle, locusts

A

Parasites:

  • usually do not kill prey
  • consume part of prey organism (host)
  • attack one or small number of prey
  • much smaller than prey
  • host is habitat and food
  • endo- or Ecto-
    eg. tapeworms, aphids, measles virus
