Lecture 8 Flashcards
(8 cards)
Memory
Process that allows us to store and later retrieve experiences and learned information.
Success remembering involves.. (4)
1) Attention 2) Encoding 3) Storage 4) Retrieval
Attention (1/4)
Aspects of the environment that we actively process or focus on
Encoding (2/4)
Forming a unique memory code that contains the information
Storage (3/4)
Maintaining encoded information over a period of time.
Retrieval (4/4)
Moving information from memory storage back to conscious attention
Three Stage Model of Storage

Short Term / Working Memory :
definition and capacity
Limited capacity memory that temporarily stores information. Normally holds 7 +/- 2 items.
Can expand capacity through “Chunking”, combining individual terms into larger units of meaning.
