Flashcards in Lecture #8 - Cancer Deck (25):
Viewing ovarian cancer as a chronic disease means?
Chronic refers to the pronged duration of this cancer which is rarely completely cured and fail to enter a complete remission, but pte live a long time with it.
We want to change the goal from complete cure to extended life.
Viewing ovarian cancer as a chronic disease changes what in management of the diseases?
This second-line therapy should:
1)optimize extended life;
2) Minimize toxicity
Role de l'infirmiere pivot en oncologie? + 4 fonctions cles?
- Personne ressource depuis 2005
4)Coordination/continuity of care
Est-ce que infirmiere pivot = "pt navigator" ou inf. de liaison?
Non, car garde un contact constant avec le pt tout en etant aidant les pt avec tous leurs besoins.
What does the supportive care framework draws upon (Fitch, 1994)?
This is about the different "soins de soutien" that cancer pt will need.
1)Human needs: physical, psych, emo, spiritual
2)Cognitive appraisal: Characterizing an event
3)Coping and Adaptation
Women: Biggest occurence and mortality
Men: biggest occurence and mortality?
Supportive care framework domains of health?
physical, psych, emo, spiritual, social
Breast cancer different trajectories?
1) No meta= aggressive treat. with goal of cure
2) With meta=goal to control, now chronic
3)Recurrence= goal to control, now chronic
Breast cancer common meta?
Brain, lymph nodes, lungs, bones, liver
Lytic vs blastic bone lesions?
1) Less bone
2) Fill bone with extra cells
Ovarian cancer prevalence and mortality?
Low pre and high mor.
Ovarian cancer medications?
Taxane (Taxol) + platinum
Ovarian cancer as chronic?
b/c 75% of pt recur and reccurent disease cannot be cured
Goal of supportive care?
What is Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN)?
Inflammation/degeneration of peripheral nervous system from direct injury by chemotherapy agents.
Symmetrical, start distally, more dose = more Sx
1) Assessment before therapy to know baseline.
2) Remove triggers
3) treat-preexisting conditions
4) Mange pain
grade 1: ASx
2:Some sensory alterations
3: Interferes with ADLs
4: Life threatning (paralysis)
Malignant Bowel Obstruction (MBO) caused by?
Unique characteristics of infirmiere pivot en oncologie (IPO)?
Continuity of care
1) IPO vs
2) Outpatient Primary nurse vs
3) Acute Care Nurses
1) Present from Dx to death
2) Present during treatments
3) Present when admitted
Emotions controlled by.. brain part?
