lecture 9: spec Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What is transmittance?
A
the fraction of incident light that passes through the sample
2
Q
What is the relationship between transmittance and absorbance
A
when transmittance is 1, absorbance is 0 (A=-log(T))
3
Q
What are the limitations to Beer’s Law in chemical analysis?
A
the absorbing species can not be in a concentration dependent equilibrium.
4
Q
What are the disadvantages of single-beam spectrophotometers?
A
- time consuming
- sample and reference have to be placed alternately in beam
- not ideal for kinetic studies (absorbance/time)
